I like the Zindus addon to sync Thunderbird and Google contacts http://www.zindus.com

For Outlook you have to pay to get Google contact sync, with Thunderbird it's free!

A major factor in many people's use of Outlook is to sync with Microsoft mail and calendar servers. The only program that I know, though there may be others, that is opensource that can accomplish this feat is Evolution. Unfortunately, Evolution is mostly Linux centric as most Windows ports of it under preform.

If compatibility with Microsoft servers is unnecessary, then perhaps Evolution or Kontact will be a better solution for you. I personally love Kontact for my own purposes and I believe that all Linux users should give it a try at some point. KMail itself is lacking in a few features some may desire, but for me it is outweighed by the ease of filters and such that I love in Opera's M2. Kontact and Evolution are both quite full featured and great as PIMs. They are built to be PIMs (though how Kontact is made is admittedly unique), unless Thunderbird. Thunderbird is merely meant to be an e-mail client and has since been expanded upon.

I believe these extensions will make Thunderbird more Outlook like, but still not enough to supersede it. For now, these extensions are better for existing Thundebird users to gain more functionality than to convert anyone over from Outlook. Maybe one day.

I work for a company that uses a Windows Exchange Server, even though I use Linux and so do several of my co-workers. I use Evolution mail, because it supports connecting to an Exchange Web Server and retrieving my e-mail. Until Thunderbird adds support for this, I can't switch.
