OpenSUSE Linux Tips, tricks, how-tos, opinions, and news
My Resume - My LinkedIn Profile - twitter: @scottmmorrisIt seems that Linux is now being licensed by M$? How does something like that happen? First, Microsoft files patents on nearly everything under the sun, many of which they do not rightfully deserve, but took from other places. Then, they claim that Linux infringes upon “their” patents. Then, they force companies into licensing agreements where said companies are paying M$ royalties for using Linux.
First, Novell sleeps with the devil. Now, M$ even has Amazon convinced that they need to license Linux from them. They aren’t the only ones, either.
*blank stare*
Apparently, I’m missing something. I was quite sure that Torvalds and Stallman began the whole GNU/Linux thing.
They did it *LONG* before Microsoft’s frivolous hey-day of patent filing. I mean, let’s be realistic here. They didn’t invent the Graphical User Interface, or what started out as what we now know as the windowing system. Or the mouse, for that matter. You think they invented the “My Documents” idea? No way. That came from the /home/username convention of Unix. What about the “C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts” file? Nope, another rip-off from another operating system that came before anything M$ ever did.
Even if you love Windows, you have to at least agree that M$ are severely abusing their size, money, and influence to bully around smaller companies (gee, that’s new) more than they ever have before. Maybe we’re just used to them doing that. Maybe we are a bunch of drones that just accept what “The Microsoft” has spoken.
Come on, people. Do not sign patent deals with M$ regarding Linux. They do not own it. Their patents are baloney. You could probably quite easily prove that a large part of them aren’t even valid (i.e., prior art existed).

This sounds like they are taking a page from Monsanto’s book or is it vice-versa? Perhaps I can patent a certain character and everything that contains it now becomes my property. The bottom line is greed. I don’t understand it but I certainly recognize it. I use their mail just to thumb my nose at them if my life and habits are so interesting then they can waste their resources on knowing them. They will never get another dime from me they have already and they have plenty.

Your barking up the wrong tree here Scott. Ya it’s easy to say “MS is evil” but the true evil is software patents. These are allowed by the governments that are usually elected into office by the public. MS is only protecting their best interests that is for sure but it is, after all, a business. If they do not patent their property then it makes it that much easier for other patent trolls to claim it as their patent and potentially go after MS for compensation. With the unwieldly number of software patents out there it would be naive to think that linux doesn’t infringe on many of them without knowing.
It’s not the corporations that are evil, it’s the patent system in some countries that make these actions a necessity for the software corporations.
Shake your fist at the gov’t the people have elected, not the companies that are only playing by the rules laid out for them.

@daenjo: sure, blame the government (i like to, especially when it’s the US government and not my own
) but who lobbies the governments to keep the broken patent system intact? the evil companies with the big budgets with which to lobby, that’s who. i notice that M$ are particularly active in this area.
