Hey Scott .. thank you so much for this information.

I have the same issue trying to get Ubuntu 8.04 LTS installed onto a salvaged LH3000.
Your article has explained very clearly what needs to be done ... which will save me a bunch of time.

[Thanks!!]

[...] However, what about cases where you need to manually mount a USB stick? For example, if you have a custom-compiled kernel module that you need to load off a USB stick during installation, what do you do? HAL ain’t gonna save your bacon. You’ll want to know how to get the USB stuff up and cracking very quickly with minimal fooling around. [...]

I have the MegaRAID 511 (i4 ATA). I have the same issues with Ubuntu 2.6.17-10. Since I have the OS installed onto a drive on the IDE chain (not on the array), I have a working system which doesn't correctly see my RAID card. I'm a newbie and just trying to avoid Windows for my file storage. Is there a way to get a megaraid.ko file which will work on my system?

Thanks

I can be emailed at andrewb@pipeline.com

Hello,
I have the same problem, installation hangs at "searching for info file...". Altough, I have not tried with SUSE 10.1 but with SUSE 9.3 Prof nd with Open SUSE 10.0.
Unfortunately, the solution from Stephan Kuhnert didn't work, I flashed the firmware to version H.02.02 but it didn't help. As this manual here is a bit too complicated for me, I'll try to get SUSE 10.1 Prof from somewhere and try to install with your description.
If anyone already compiled this module for SUSE 9.3 Prof, that would be great if you could send it to me so I can make the regular installation.
Thanks!
Salute,
Lucas

I had it configured as a raid 5. I have recently reinstalled. Much less painful now that I have my own modules for it already compiled. It is now a raid 1. I'll re-run hdparm on it with the new setup and post the output. I'll take a look at the other questions you have asked, as well.

Thanks bunch for your information.
Mine comes out like the following.

/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 664 MB in 2.01 seconds = 330.98 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 110 MB in 3.04 seconds = 36.19 MB/sec

Compared to your result it's very poor. Want to make sure your spec before following the guide.

1. We have same netraid 1m card. Do you have U160 SCSI on it? is it 10k? or 7.2k?
2. Is your hard drive configured as raid 0? or 1?

Output is:

/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 952 MB in 2.01 seconds = 474.50 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 172 MB in 3.03 seconds = 56.78 MB/sec

It's also been recommended to update the firmware (which I have not done).

Hope that helps. Thanks for stopping by.

I have legacy compaq sp700 workstation that has netraid 1m card on it.
I had no problem with installation(suse 10.1) and lsmod shows me 'megaraid_mm' and 'megariad_mbox' is loaded.
Also 'hdparm -tT /dev/sda' shows 40MB/s.

I have four U160 SCSI drives configured raid 0. So I guess the speed should be far better than 40MB/s.

Want to follow this instruction to see the difference but not sure it's worth to do it. Is your scsi hard drive performance better than 40MB/s ?

Nice work! I try it with my HP LP1000r ... it works :D

I will soon post a little HowTo and more pre-build megaraid-modules (smp-, xen-kernels). But now I have to install the LP1000r first and try to update the kernel.

Some other tests with other servers will follow!
