Way to go, bro. Beautifully piercing words, and as usual, your sarcasm fills my cup to the brim with a savory helping of flavorful Linux goodness.

Take care, and long live Gentoo! :)

Hilf can be thought of as a fool. Or arrogant. Take your pick. As alluded to, if Linux and FOSS in general isn't a threat, and is retreating on the server room then why does Mr. Hilf's current position even exsist? and why is Microsoft spending so much money to make it that way?

The answer can be taken from the Immortal Bard: Methinks they doth protest too much.

So Hilf is a fool if he is of the opinion that by saying something is so makes it so. Or he is arrogant because he is of the opinion that by saying something is so that we'll believe him.

“Bill Hilf, general manager of competitive strategy at Microsoft, said pundits have predicted for years that Linux will gain momentum on the desktop, but that won’t happen because of the complexity involved in delivering a tightly integrated and tested desktop product.

How come Linux (the kernel) has about ~8 million lines and the Windows (with luggage) reaches 50-60 million and the developers seem to struggle with the massive codebase ?

Linux is itself only a kernel while Windows is a whole bunch of needed and very unneeded junk.

Just look at the original release-date for Vista (Longhorn).

Loved the reply to the M$-FUD, Scott! Fight fire with fire.

Tony,

Have you tried running Autocad Microstation under Wine? The app is listed in the WineHQ app database:

http://appdb.winehq.org/search.php?q=autodesk

Not sure if your version works, but it could be worth a try.

Tony,
You are exactly right, man. Let's hope (and help when possible) that some CAD stuff comes to the Linux platform soon!

I use Fedora 5 at home but work for huge engineering co that uses Autocad Microstation that only runs in Windows. We have about 4000 users using too. If the companys designed these apps to run on Linux there would be a reason to try and switch desktops. Until then its still windows only...

[...] Kudos to Scott Morris for this blistering post addressing the latest M$ FUD. He makes some very valid points rebutting the nonsense that spews forth from Redmond in the form of their anti-F/OSS mouthpiece (AKA Bill Hilf). Speaking of M$ it’s seems like more and more executives are fleeing since the retirement announcement of Bill Gates. You know the ship is sinking once the rats start jumping ship en masse. I have to admit I’m enjoying the gnashing of the teeth coming from Redmond these days. What goes around comes around. [...]

frantic,
You are totally right. However, most of the other institutions and governmental departments have been desktop migrations. I just threw the bank thing in for good measure.
