Scott,

Hope you still read comments made on this post since it's been quite a while. All the same, I just wanted to say thank you very much. I reluctantly (manual kernel upgrading is kind of spooky!) followed your tutorial and it worked to the bone! Thanks for sharing.

Nice one Scott!

Regards,
Richard

How do I get Yast to know the new kernel is installed so an autoupdate doesn't change it to an earlier version?

Well, I figured out why USB devices weren't being recognized: I had disabled SCSI support -- who knew the two were dependent?

Still don't know how to get the app-armour patch and apply it to get that back.

instead of going through that last part, I've seen (and tried) "make install" and it seemed to work. is there some reason not to do that?
Also, I noticed I don't have app-armor support any more, nor is it recognizing USB pen drives upon insertion any more. When I go back to the old kernel in GRUB, they work again.

Why not perform a "make rpm" instead of "make ; make modules ; make modules_install"
then the kernel can be managed by the package manager.

Hello,
I wanted to say "Thank You" for the tutorial above. I've been using Linux since 2000, and have not been brave enough to compile my own Kernel until now. Using OpenSuse, I updated to the 2.6.16-1 kernel update. When I did, my cpufreq did not work anymore. I decided to take the plunge and try to "roll my own" Kernel with the newest 2.6.24. It works great! Now, if I just need to find a way to save this tutorial.... Thanks again! Robert
